Press release -

Extra meeting as hundreds have say on Prestwich High Street plans

An extra information session has been arranged for residents and businesses to hear about the latest plans to improve the heart of Prestwich.

It will take place on Monday 7 December at the Longfield Suite from 4pm to 7pm, and will include a presentation followed by a Q & A session starting at 6pm.

The £2 million proposal, funded with £1.5m from Bury Council and £500,000 from Transport for Greater Manchester, aims to give Prestwich a lively high street, full of independent retailers, with a much improved environment and measures to tackle congestion.

The scheme aims to:

  • Improve the town centre environment for all
  • Improve pedestrian movement and accessibility
  • Support local businesses
  • Attract additional public and private investment
  • Reduce the impact of traffic while maintaining traffic flow

Councillor Jane Black, chair of Prestwich Township Forum, said: “More than 300 people have taken part in the official consultation since the plans were unveiled just two weeks ago.

“It’s important that everyone is fully informed of the detail and the reasons behind the plans, so we have called this extra meeting to give people even more opportunity to find out the facts behind the proposals.

“It’s also important to stress that this is a plan to improve the town centre environment for all; pedestrians, shoppers and businesses as well as road users.

“Consultation runs until 23 December, and I urge everyone to look at the plans and give us your views, either online or fill in a survey at the library.”

  • The plans are on display in Prestwich Library, and council staff will be there to discuss the proposals with visitors on the following days - 3, 6, 12, 13, 17 and 20 December – from 10am to noon.
  • Online - to have your say, and view all the proposals, artist’s impressions and an extensive Frequently Asked Questions list, go to www.bury.gov.uk/prestwichhighst
