Press release -

Festive season bin collections

Bury Council is reminding residents that over the festive period there are no planned changes to blue, green or grey bin collections.

Due to reduced garden waste at this time of year, brown bin collections are paused for a brief period from 20 to 31 December. This means collection crews can put extra effort into emptying the other bins which can fill up more quickly at this time of year.

Blue, green and grey bins should be put out by 7am on the scheduled day and all waste must fit inside with the bin lids fully closed.

Residents can help make the most of the space in their bins by squashing and flattening recycling items and by squashing and squeezing air out of bagged rubbish. While extra bags of waste cannot be collected, they can be taken to the household waste and recycling centres which are open every day except 25 December and 1 January.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day all fall at the weekend this year, so crews will be out on weekdays collecting bins as usual.

“I want to reassure residents that our crews will be doing everything possible to keep collections on track but, with the national spike in covid infections, we cannot rule out our crews being impacted. And, given the time of year, there’s also the possibility of issues caused by snow or ice.

“If bin collections are unavoidably delayed, please leave your bins out so our crews can empty them as soon as possible. And don’t forget you can get email reminders and updates if you sign up for bin alerts at www.bury.gov.uk/binalerts.”

To assist crews with completing collection rounds, residents are asked to park their vehicles where they won’t obstruct the collection trucks and leave bins out with the handles facing the road.

Cllr Quinn added: “If a collection throughout your street is missed, our crews will know about it and will return as soon as they can. But if an individual bin is missed residents should check the advice at www.bury.gov.uk/missedbin and report it by 1pm the next working day, if they need to.

“And finally, the current collection calendars last until December 2022, so please hold on to them for another year.”
