Finnish ambassador opens new art exhibition in Bury

There’s no need to travel to Helsinki to experience the latest in Finnish contemporary art.

This summer, Bury Art Museum continues its long association with Finnish art by hosting a ‘must-see’ exhibition of the latest developments by leading Finnish curator Laura Köönikkä.

The ‘New Narrative and Reader’ exhibition will be opened on Friday 5 June by the Finnish ambassador to the United Kingdom, Pekka Huhtaniemi. Also attending will be the Finnish consulate in Manchester and other key exemplars of Finnish culture in the North West.

The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday 6 June and features a mixture of Finnish artwork and sculpture, plus a live curator’s talk from Laura Köönikkä who has been described as one of the “15 Curators to Watch in 2015” by Artslant Worldwide.

Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the latest works from 15 prominent Finnish artists including Laura Konttinen, Sami Parkkinen and Pauliina Kaasalainen.

The exhibition includes activities for all ages, including Finnish culture talks and accompanying workshops up to 29 August when the exhibition moves to Salo Art Museum in Finland.

Entry to the museum and the exhibition is free, and talks and workshop classes start from £5.

Bury Art Museum is located on Moss Street, next to bus and tram interchange and opposite the Fusilier Museum.
