First round of £500,000 road safety schemes gets under way

A range of road safety and traffic calming measures installed across the borough is about to get under way.

The council announced a £500,000 investment into these schemes in its recent budget, and is front-loading £400,000 of the programme into the coming financial year (2022/23) to make an immediate impact.

The projects include four new pedestrian crossings: on Bolton Road West in Ramsbottom (near Top Park); Tottington Road, Bury; Market Street in Tottington (near Lowes Street); and in Stand Lane, Radcliffe.

Other schemes include a range of traffic calming measures (such as road humps, traffic islands and 20mph zones) plus funding for new School Streets and Play Streets.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “We are committed to improving the condition of our roads and ensuring they are safe for everyone, which is why we’re making big investments in repairs, resurfacing and road safety schemes.

“Our £500,000 road safety programme is part of our £10 million three-year programme of highway improvements and will make dozens of roads across the borough safer for pedestrians and other road users.

“We've frontloaded this funding to improve road safety in key locations as quickly as possible and will be delivering further schemes in 2023 and 2024."
