Fusiliers to make Homecoming Parade in Bury

To mark the safe return of the 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers from its final tour of Afghanistan, a Homecoming Parade will take place in Bury town centre on Tuesday 19 November.

The soldiers will march from Wellington Road and head along Manchester Road, past the town hall on Knowsley Street, Angouleme Way, Silver Street, Bolton Street, Haymarket Street, and back down Knowsley Street.

Road closures and traffic restrictions will be in place. The parade will start at 2.30pm and end at around 3.30pm.

Councillor Mike Connolly, leader of Bury Council, said: “The Fusiliers have a long and proud relationship with Bury, and I am sure that many of you will wish to come to the parade and welcome our troops back home.”

The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers is the only organisation to have been awarded Freedom of the Borough in Bury.

Colonel Mike Glover, Regimental Secretary (Lancashire), said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the lads to say ‘thank you’ to the people of Bury for the support and encouragement that they have received while on operations in Afghanistan.

“The relationship between Bury and its regiment, the Fusiliers, has never been stronger, as was shown by the turnout at Fusilier Rigby’s funeral. Despite difficult times for the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, it is clear that no matter what happens, the regiment has the support of the people of Bury.”
