Press release -
Ginnel to be gated to keep residents safe
A ginnel in Whitefield is to be gated due to the high level of crime caused by people congregating in the area.
Councillors are set to approve the installation of alley gates either side of the ginnel between Malton Avenue and Sawley Avenue, Whitefield, which will be locked and access prohibited.
This follows a raft of complaints relating to anti-social behaviour, noise, litter, drug use, intimidation, and even knife crime. In 2024, some 67 crimes were recorded within 100m of the ginnel.
Councillor Sandra Walmsley, cabinet member for communities and inclusion, said: “Residents are fed up with problems being caused in the area, and they are overwhelmingly in support of this move, which is also backed by the police. I hope this will help give them the peace of mind they deserve.”
The proposal is due to be approved by the council’s cabinet tomorrow (Wednesday 10 Sep).
