Golden anniversary for Bury Market trader

Mohammed Ghyas is celebrating half a century as a trader on the famous Bury Market.

It’s been 50 years since Mohammed started serving customers at the award-winning market, where he runs M.G. Italian Fashion on Georgiana Block.

He was presented with a certificate and flowers by the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Sandra Walmsley.

Mohammed said: “It has been a very good job. When I started, the first 2-3 years I was a casual trader, and it was very hard as I didn’t speak good English and had no family to help me. But, over time and after a lot of hard work, it has been a great experience. It’s a fantastic market, I’ve worked on a lot of different markets over the years but this one is great.

“I still have some long-term customers. One lady visited me a few weeks ago, and she was wearing a skirt that she had bought from me 25 years ago!

“There have been a lot of ups and downs, but ultimately after a lot of hard work it has all been worth it. I’ve always tried my best to give respect and a great service to everybody, traders and customers, for 50 years.”

The mayor said: “It was a pleasure to present Mohammed with a Certificate of Appreciation to mark his 50 years as a stall holder on Bury Market.

“The market is the beating heart of our town centre and people like Mohammed, and his son Waqas, are what make it so special. I wish them the very best for the next 50 years on Bury Market.”
