Green Flag success at the dozen

All 12 of Bury’s main parks have been officiallyrecognised as being among the best in Britain for the third year running.

They have today just received the coveted Green Flag award from Keep Britain Tidy, which recognises well maintained and well managed parks that have an excellent community involvement.

This result puts Bury at joint 8th position in the UK ‘league table’ for the number of Green Flag parks, alongside the likes of Manchester and Belfast.

Bury’s winning parks include:

* Clarence, Hoyles, Manchester Road and Openshaw parks in Bury East

* Burrs Country Park and Whitehead Park in Bury West

* Bolton Road Park and Close Park in Radcliffe

* St Mary’s Park in Prestwich

* Nuttall Park in Ramsbottom

* Town Meadow Park in Tottington

* Whitefield Park in Whitefield.

Close Park has now held the award for ten years running, followed by Burrs, Clarence Park, Nuttall Park, Openshaw Park, St Mary’s Park, Whitefield Park and Whitehead Park with nine years of Green Flag success.

Councillor Tony Isherwood, cabinet member for environment, said: “This is a tremendous achievement, and goes to show the fantastic help we receive from our local community through our wealth of volunteers who continue to work hard in our parks complementing the work of the Parks and Countryside and Grounds Maintenance Services. This result is a well deserved reward for volunteers, friends of parks and council staff alike.”

Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, said: “Congratulations to Bury for a significant achievement in winning 12 Green Flag Awards for its parks. It's testament to the brilliant work and dedication of parks staff and the local authority generally in ensuring that local people have great green spaces to enjoy."
