Hatched and matched at the library

Chickens that were recently hatched at Topping Fold Community Centre and Library have now come home to roost!

They are now permanent residents in the pen and coop built by members of the Brighter Futures Project group.

Claire Bebbington, community development officer, said: “The chickens are lightSussexhens which should start laying in early spring. Jack Murray and Diane Wood are two of the volunteers who have been working hard in taking care of the chickens so many thanks to them both for all their help.”

The Brighter Futures group is funded through the Big Lottery and managed by Bury Adult Learning Service.

Paul Fulton, project manager, said: “The aims of the project are to help people experiencing or recovering from mental ill health, drug or alcohol issues, or are homeless or at risk, to develop greater confidence and learn some useful skills. We also work with the Psychiatric Unit atFairfieldHospitalso that patients have the chance to work outside and socialise which has worked really well.”

The group has also been building raised beds, a poly tunnel and greenhouse with funding from Topping Fold Tenants and Residents Association and Six Town Housing.

The garden and the chickens can be viewed at times when the library is normally open.
