Helping our armed forces and veterans through the most difficult times

Bury Council has reaffirmed its support for armed forces personnel against the backdrop of the turmoil in Afghanistan.

It is urging serving members and veterans to seek advice at this time if they have been affected by the recent events or need help with their daily lives.

Councillor Richard Gold, cabinet member for communities, said: “Our armed forces do a tremendous job in the most dangerous situations to keep us safe.

“Bury has a long and proud military history, and it is only right that we do all we can to support our serving men and women and our many veterans who have taken part in operations across the world.

“The current events in Afghanistan have reminded us just how brutal and protracted these conflicts can be, and the long-lasting effects they have on members of our armed forces here in Bury.

“If you or someone you know is affected by your time in the military and/or recent events concerning Afghanistan, the Military Veterans Service & OpCourage NHS Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (TILS) North West are inviting you to contact them to discuss how they can best support you at this time.”

You can make a general enquiry/referral by phone: 0300 323 0707 or by email the.mvs@nhs.net

Cllr Gold added: “Through our armed forces covenant, there are many ways we can help our current and former servicemen and women in their daily lives away from the front line.

“We give additional preference on our housing register for those in urgent need of a home. There are many dedicated programmes in Bury to help them access health services, along with a range of measures to help with employment, adult education and training.”
