Helping those who are struggling at this tough time

The work of a charity which looks after homeless people and those in need has been praised by council leader Eamonn O’Brien.

He visited the Caritas Red Door project, based at Peter Street in Bury, to see the work that they do.

Councillor O’Brien said: “Sadly, with winter now upon us following 18 months of a pandemic, more people need help than ever before.

“Caritas do a fantastic job in supporting people who are homeless or in temporary accommodation, and those who need a variety of help. They provide people with food, but just as importantly they invite people inside and speak to them about their individual circumstances. They even had a nurse giving out flu jabs when I visited!

“By working together we can support people who are struggling to make ends meet and reduce the need for people to come here in the first place.

“As we come out of the Covid pandemic, and with the cuts in Universal Credit, helping people in need is more important than ever. That’s why we’ve launching a winter support fund and support for residents, both those in work and out of work, who need that extra help in the coming weeks and months.”
