Keeping Bury clean with new litter bins

Bury Council is investing £25,000 to purchase and install 100 new litter bins to help keep Bury clean and deliver an enhanced street care service.

The new 100-litre bins will be located at locations across the borough. The main priority will be to replace existing bins that are damaged or worn out, while some will also be sited in new locations where needed.

This brings the number of litter bins across the borough to around 1,500, which provides around 150,000 litres of capacity in total.

The bins are emptied routinely by the council’s street care teams on varying frequencies depending on their location and usage. Across the year in the region of 600 tonnes of waste is collected from the bins. Around 90 tonnes (15%) of this waste could be recycled if it was taken home and put in either the green or blue kerbside recycling bins.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “Bury Council invests significant resources in street cleaning and litter collection, because keeping our streets clean and tidy is one of the council’s top priorities.

“This extra investment will help reduce the litter that gets onto our streets, but everyone must make every effort to dispose of their waste responsibly if we are to avoid communities being blighted by unwanted litter.

“Let’s all do our bit, let’s keep Bury clean.”
