Kenneth gets free swims for life

A box of chocolates, a bunch of flowers and free swimming for the rest of his life were the order of the day for Kenneth Collins as he approached his 90th birthday.

The gifts were presented to Kenneth by Bury Leisure sports centres to acknowledge his exceptional loyalty to Castle Leisure Centre.  Kenneth has been a regular early morning swimmer at the centre for going on 30 years and he and his wife, Betty, continue to swim there 2 or 3 mornings each week.

Councillor Jane Lewis, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Culture said “Kenneth is a fantastic role model for younger and older people alike.  We often get told that swimming is good for us but at the grand age of 90 years Kenneth is living proof.  I hope he and his wife enjoy many more swims, for many more years to come.”

Kenneth Collins said “I’ve been swimming at Castle Leisure centre for such a long time now and I enjoy it just as much today as I did back in the 1980’s.  The centre was a lot younger then, as was I, but it’s still my favourite place to take a plunge and get some healthy exercise.  The kindness and generosity of the staff at Castle is much appreciated.  After nearly 30 years it feels like they’re part of the family.”
