Ladies – and gents – who lunch

Ladies – and gents – who lunch

A “Winter Warmer” lunch club has been bringing people together at Moorside Community Centre and Library.

The weekly club, which features guest speakers, has proved to be a great success and given local people a friendly place at which to socialise.

Alan Bithell, aged 81, said: “My wife Mavis and I started coming to the lunch club and, because this library is not too big, I felt more comfortable asking for help with using the computers and I’m now doing family history research on Ancestry.”

Another regular is Dorothy Drummond, 81, who enjoys the weekly lunch club as a way of getting out and meeting with people her own age.

The club was set up in October 2012 with funding made available through Seedfield Tenants and Residents Association from a successful funding bid to the Moorside Community First Panel.

Dawn Broadhurst, community development officer, said: “We are hoping to get some more funding so we can organise further sessions of the weekly lunch club as it really does make a difference, especially to people who may otherwise feel isolated. As well as the lunch club there is also a knitting group every Tuesday (2-4pm) and a craft group on Mondays (1.30-3.30pm). We are also hoping to start a chess group on Fridays so watch this space.”
