Latest measures to boost walking and cycling around busy roads

Construction will begin shortly on Bury’s next two walking and cycling schemes.

Work will start on 15 August to reconfigure the junction of Jubilee Way and Manchester Road outside Bury Town Hall. These roads are crossed by hundreds of students every day on their way to St Gabriel’s, Bury Church and Bury Grammar schools. The revised layout will make it easier and safer for them to walk or cycle from one side to the other. The work will take six months and measures will be taken to minimise disruption to traffic.

The second scheme is in Prestwich, again in an area that is used daily by many students. New pedestrian crossing facilities will be provided at the busy Bury Old Road/Heywood Road junction and new pedestrian/cycle facilities at Bury Old Road/St Margaret’s Road. The work will last ten weeks from 25 August.

Work on a third scheme is scheduled for later this year – the building of a new bridge over the River Roch at Lower Gigg. This will replace a privately-owned bridge that has long been declared unsafe. The bridleway it carries connects Bury with businesses at Pilsworth and is the only crossing of the river between Heap Bridge and Blackford Bridge.

These projects, totalling £3.5 million, are funded by the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Walking and Cycling Challenge Fund, and are part of a programme of initiatives to encourage more people to walk and cycle.
