Major resurfacing works to improve Rochdale Road (A58)

A £645,000 scheme to resurface the A58 Rochdale Road starts on Monday (21 March) as part of the council’s ongoing programme to improve the borough’s highways.

The whole of the road between Angouleme Way and Wash Lane is being relaid in an operation that will last for 14 weeks.

The works will be carried out in two phases, each lasting seven weeks:

  • Overnight, between 8pm and 5.30am, Monday to Friday. This will mean a full closure of the road between Angouleme Way and Heywood Street, with diversion routes in place.
  • During the off-peak daytime period of 9.30am and 3pm, Monday to Friday. This will require temporary signals and side road closures. Heywood Street and Bond Street will be closed to traffic phase to allow the junction of Heywood Street and Rochdale Road to be resurfaced. Diversion routes will be in place, and the side roads closed where they join Rochdale Road.

During both phases, lane closures will be require between 9.30am and 3pm to carry out repairs to manhole covers in the road prior to resurfacing works starting.

It may be possible that weekend working is required if unforeseen circumstances arise.

Parking along the road will be suspended from 9.30am to 3pm, and residents are urged to park elsewhere during those times.

Access to Pimhole Road will be maintained at all times, as will pedestrian access and access for emergency vehicles.

Councillor Tony Isherwood, cabinet member for environment, said: “This is a major scheme to improve the condition of one of the busiest roads into Bury.

“In a scheme such as this, some disruption is inevitable; however, we have tried to keep this to a minimum by scheduling the works to take place overnight and outside of the morning and evening rush hours.”

Councillor Sandra Walmsley, cabinet member for resource and regulation, added: “I know that residents across the borough have concerns about the state of our roads, and this shows that we are committed to investing in improvements to our highway network.

“We are spending £2.3 million on highways maintenance this coming year, plus an additional £500,000 specifically on potholes.”
