Major roadworks completed at one of Bury’s busiest junctions

Bury Council has completed a major carriageway resurfacing scheme through one of the borough’s busiest road junctions.

The Moorgate junction is one of the main arteries of Bury’s road network, and is used by 40,000 vehicles a day.

To reduce potential disruption to local businesses and the travelling public, the council carried out the works over a period of 30 nights. By employing lane closures, diversion routes and making timing changes to the junction’s traffic lights, traffic flows were maintained throughout.

The work comprised the resurfacing of 15,000m2 of road along Moorgate, Derby Way and sections of Peel Way and Walmersley Road, plus:

  • The replacement of 5km of road markings
  • The fixing of 820 new road studs
  • The clearing of 100 gully pots and the renewal of covers where necessary
  • Approximately 0.5km of carriageway drainage cleaned
  • Over 100 pieces of ironwork replaced
  • The relining of 3 box junctions

These works were facilitated with the co-operation of The Rock Shopping Park, Moorgate Primary Care Centre and TfGM.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “These improvements are part of our £20m Highway Investment Strategy (HIS). Bury should receive around £6m per year from the Department of Transport for its 660km of road network to be kept in what’s called a ‘standstill state’. Since 2010 we’ve received a third of that amount, so we’ve taken advantage of historically low interest rates to borrow the money needed to improve junctions like Moorgate.”
