Market Street reopens with road safety measures in place

A key road into Bury town centre has re-opened following improvements making it safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to travel.

Market Street now has improved access for communities in Fishpool and Pimhole, making it easier to reach local shops, services, public transport and the town centre by walking and cycling, while reducing reliance on short car journeys.

The scheme included work to Market Street:

• Two new pedestrian-controlled crossings
• Two upgraded bus stops
• One new continuous footpath at the entrance to Bury Athletics Club
• Separated cycle and pedestrian route from traffic with the shared space widened along the full length of Market Street.
• One new raised table at the junction with Trinity Street
• Resurfacing of the whole road from junction with Angouleme Way to 50m south of the junction with Wellington Road.

On Wellington Road:

• The roundabout was replaced with a CYCLOPS junction which separates cyclists and pedestrians from other traffic
• Resurfacing of Wellington Road from its junction with Grosvenor Street to the entrance of Grundy Hub field.

The improvements complement recent upgrades at the junction of Market Street and Angouleme Way, at Gigg Lane and the work taking place at the junction of Parkhills Road and Manchester Road.

Councillor Lucy Smith: Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate Change and Operations said: “I’d like to thank everyone for their patience while these key improvement works have been carried out.

“These changes should make it easier and safer for people to walk, cycle or use mobility aids for everyday trips, such as going to school, work or the shops.

“Thank you for everybody’s patience while these works were done, particularly for people travelling along Manchester Road while we improve the junction with Parkhills Road.

“The work has been timed for the school holidays to minimise disruption and once the new signals are in place we will carry out the resurfacing work at night.”

Next steps for the Fishpool and Pimhole Active Travel Scheme

The £5.7m Fishpool and Pimhole Active Travel Scheme forms part of the Bee Network and is funded through the UK Government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) and the Mayor of Greater Manchester’s Challenge Fund.

Work is ongoing at the junction of Parkhills Road and Manchester Road improving the junction and installing new traffic crossing signals.

Once this work is finished Manchester Road will be resurfaced between Gigg Lane and Ashlor Street with night closures and signed diversions. This work is expected to start during the early part of September.
