Mayor says ‘Hola’ to students from Valencia

Tens of Spanish students were given a warm welcome at Bury Town Hall by the Mayor, Councillor Michelle Wiseman.

Around 60 boys and girls from Valencia came to stay in the Bury area for three or four weeks in their summer break as part of an educational and culturally enriching programme.

Each of them, aged between 12 and 17, were matched with local families and local students by way of hobbies and interests.

The Spanish students attended school with their British 'buddy' for the last few weeks of the summer term. Nearly all secondary schools across Bury took part in the programme. Many Bury students now had the opportunity to return to Spain with their new Spanish friends.

Cllr Wiseman and the mayoress, her daughter Danielle, welcomed the visitors to the mayor’s parlour and also showed then round the council chamber.

“We were fascinated to learn of this exchange scheme and the benefits gained by our own students here in Bury and the Spanish students,” she said. “We met them only a few days into their visit here and they had already been to many places of interest, in Bury and around the North West.”
