Michelle will be new Mayor of Bury

Pilkington Park ward councillor Michelle Wiseman will become the new Mayor of Bury for the 2014/15 municipal year.

She will take over the chains of office from Cllr Sharon Briggs at the Bury Council meeting on 3 June, it was announced at last night’s (Wed 5 Feb) meeting of the cabinet.

Cllr Wiseman was first elected to the council in 2003. Over the years she has served in a number of roles, including being executive member for safer, secure communities, chair of Whitefield and Unsworth Area Board, and as a board member of Six Town Housing.

She stood for Parliament in 2010 as the Conservative candidate for Bury South, and she was Deputy Leader of Bury Council’s Conservative group in 2012-2013. In December 2013 she stood down from the Conservative group to serve the remainder of her term on the council as an Independent councillor, and will now be the metropolitan borough’s first Independent mayor since its creation.

Cllr Wiseman is chief executive of Manchester Jewish Community Care, which runs the Crumpsall-based Nicky Alliance Centre. 

She has three children - Marc, Amelia and Danielle - and Danielle will be be her Mayoress during the mayoral year.

Cllr Wiseman said: “I feel privileged and humbled to have been given this honour. I am looking forward to my year as Mayor and to meeting as many residents of Bury as possible throughout the year.”
