New bus station for Radcliffe on its way

A new £2 million bus station for Radcliffe is on its way thanks to a funding partnership between council and transport leaders.

This the second and key element in the first phase of regeneration announced by Bury Council last year. Work has already started on the first stage, an £800,000 refurbishment of Radcliffe Market Hall.

The council’s cabinet has now agreed to put in £1 million towards the bus station project, which has been matched by £1 million from the Department for Transport.

Councillor Mike Connolly, leader of Bury Council, said: “These are exciting times for the people of Radcliffe. We promised to put investment into the town, and that’s exactly what we are doing. These proposals should go a significant way to transforming the town centre, making it more attractive to
visitors and boosting local businesses.

“With the funding now in place, work is under way for the detailed designs of the new bespoke shelters which are being designed by award-winning architects Austin Smith Lord.”

Councillor Andrew Fender, Transport for Greater Manchester Committee chair, said: “This is a real positive for Radcliffe and the surrounding area as the new development will not only provide a new, modern and attractive bus station but will contribute significantly to the town’s exciting regeneration proposals.

“The new facility will be a real improvement for passengers and will be able to accommodate both Ring and Ride services and a growth in the number of services that currently use the facility.”
