New CCTV and improvements on Bury Market

Upgraded cameras are now being installed on Bury Market to boost security and contribute to future development plans.

The new CCTV system will be ready in time for the full re-opening of the market once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted, and help to maintain a safe shopping environment for visitors.

Councillor Jane Black, cabinet member for the cultural economy, said: “Bury Market’s CCTV is also pivotal in its role it provides for the wider town centre security. The council’s security service at Bradley Fold also has access to these cameras out-of-hours for security reasons and in emergency call-out situations for intruder alarms and fire alarm call outs.

“This would bring the operating system into the 21-century, giving us the ability in future to accurately count the number of people visiting the market, with a heat map to identify busy areas and shopper habits which will contribute to our strategic plans to modernise the market.”

The council has also recently completed a major refurbishment of the public toilets in the market hall, and has now agreed to replace the roof over the toilet block.

Cllr Black added: “Bury Market is a great success and a huge visitor attraction, and we will continue to invest in it to ensure the market has a bright and prosperous future in a post-Covid world.”
