New exhibition at Bury Sculpture Centre

A major solo exhibition and catalogue by British sculptor and disability rights activist Tony Heaton OBE is coming to Bury Sculpture Centre.

Opening on 5 March, Altered includes early work from the National Disability Arts Collection and Archive – which he initiated - to more recent work including direct stone carving.

Tony has exhibited nationally and internationally and has work in public and private collections. Born in Lancashire, he works from studios in the North West of England, the east end of London, Portland Sculpture and Quarry Trust and Arco Arte in Carrara Italy.

He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2013 for services to the arts and disability arts movement, has an alumni award from Lancaster University and honorary doctorates from both the University of Leicester and Buckinghamshire New University.

Tony says: “I am concerned with my own existence and my interaction with both the material and non-material world. In my interactions, I am almost always reminded that I am perceived as a disabled person, and much of my work explores my personal analysis of these everyday interactions. As the artist Georg Baselitz said, “you cannot escape your history and the trauma of your experience ...What are the echoes that follow you...”?’

The exhibition opens at 2pm on Saturday 5 March, when visitors are invited to meet the artist and talk about his work.

Altered runs until 25 June. Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre is open Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, and on Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm.
