New online support to help young care leavers

A new website to help young people leaving care in Bury has been launched.

The Care Leaver Offer sets out the support that care leavers can expect from the council and its partners as they make their individual journeys to independence and adult life.

The website is hosted by The Bury Directory and offers a whole range of information, support, advice, contacts and events on a wide range of topics including finance, education, health and wellbeing, participation and support.

The Mayor of Bury, Councillor Trevor Holt, attended the launch of the website which took place at The Hub, a social drop-in centre for care leavers at the New Kershaw Centre.

One of the visitors he spoke to was Lucey Kirkham, who was in the care of the council for just under three years.

She said: “Since leaving care I have received amazing support and advice from my personal advisor, Debra Frost, and the rest of the Bury Council through care team. I think that the website is a great idea, as everything that you would need to know or find out is all in one place, with easy access. The launch was a lovely day, and it was great to see everybody together! I am currently going into my second year of university, undertaking an LLB law degree at Manchester Metropolitan University, and hoping to go into a career in family law.”
