On the right path

Walkers and cyclists will be on a firming footing when a path next to the Bury Tesco store gets a makeover.

Work is due to start on 9 February to upgrade the path that runs next alongside Woodfields Retail Park between Chamberhall Street and Marsden Street.

The ramp and steps down to the railway bridge are to be reconstructed, and the path will be widened and given an all-weather surface.

The £150,000 project is being paid for by the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund, which was bid for and is being distributed by Transport for Greater Manchester.

Councillor Tony Isherwood, cabinet member for environment, said: “This path is already well used but the work is intended to make it more popular still with pedestrians and cyclists, whether shopping or heading across town. It would save, for example, someone from Brandlesholme heading for Freetown having to cope with the traffic on the ring road.”

The work is expected to take six to eight weeks to complete and the path will have to be closed for much of this time. During this work, the alternative route from Chamberhall will be via Castlecroft Road, Tan Pits road, then back across Peel Way.
