Opening-up Bury town centre - have your say on Streets for All Bury town centre links

Residents, businesses and stakeholders across Bury are being encouraged to have their say on plans to improve connections around Bury town centre, making it easier, safer and more attractive to walk, wheel and cycle.

Public engagement on the Streets for All Bury town centre links proposals, to help shape the next stage of design, ends at 23:59 on Monday 10 August 2026.

The proposed improvements focus on creating better links to key destinations such as workplaces, schools and town centre amenities, while enhancing the look and feel of local neighbourhoods.

The scheme is funded by the UK Government through the Streets for All element of Greater Manchester’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS). It includes proposed improvements across three key areas:

  • Southern Gateway – connecting Bury Grammar School/Fishpool to the town centre ring road
  • Western Gateway – linking Burrs Country Park, Woodhill Fold and the Woodfields area
  • Freetown – improving routes between the town centre and Hoyle Park

Residents and stakeholders can get involved and share their views online or by email:

Councillor Lucy Smith, Cabinet Member Environment, Climate Change and Operations, said:

“We want to make it easier and safer for people to get to and move around Bury town centre, whether they’re walking, wheeling or cycling. These proposals are about opening-up opportunities by reviewing access and the barrier the dual carriageway creates for pedestrians and cyclists".

"We hope to design schemes that allow more people to easily reach the town for cultural, social and shopping experiences, improving everyday journeys, connecting communities, and creating streets that people can enjoy".

"It’s important that local people help shape these plans, so I would strongly encourage everyone to take a look and share their views.”

As part of the engagement programme, information will be shared with properties in and around the three areas.
