Parents reminded to apply for their child’s secondary school place

Press release -

Parents reminded to apply for their child’s secondary school place

Applications open on 1 September for parents to choose what secondary school their children will transfer to in autumn 2023.

The deadline for applying for a secondary school place is 31 October 2022. If you apply after this date, it can severely reduce your chances of obtaining a place at your preferred school.

To be able to apply for a place in a Bury school you must be resident in Bury; if you live outside Bury, you must apply through your home authority.

Parents will receive further information about the application process from their child’s primary school at the beginning of September.

Please read The Transfer to Secondary School Guide 2023 which is published on the council’s website before applying for your secondary school place. This details the admissions process and should give you all the information you need along with our frequently asked questions. You will also find further information in the downloads section that will help make an informed choice when applying for a school place.

  • More Bury children are going to their first-choice secondary school than in many other areas.

Figures show that 89.6% were given a place at their first choice for the 2022-23 school year – up from 83.7% the year before, and the highest proportion since 2014-15. The average for England was 83.35%.

Meanwhile, 96.4% were allocated to one of the schools on their list – also up from the year before, when the same figure stood at 94.1%.
