Pioneering helpline launched for parents with SEND children

Bury Council has launched a helpline to provide psychological support to parents and carers during the Covid-19 crisis.

The service, which started on Monday (11 May), is aimed at parents whose children have special educational needs or disabilities and whose daily worries have been exacerbated by the current pandemic and the impending return to school.

The helpline is delivered by Bury Education Psychology Service and is open on Mondays from 1pm to 3.30pm and on Wednesdays from 9.30am to noon. The helpline number is 0161 253 6406.

The advice could cover issues such as anxiety about being away from school (and returning); missing friends; changes to routine; loss and bereavement; and entering or moving school.

The helpline is already proving to be popular. Parents have sought advice and support on a range of issues including how to cope with home schooling and support their child’s emotional needs.

Councillor Tamoor Tariq, cabinet member for children and families, said: “We know that this is a very worrying time for parents and carers, and even more so for those who have children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

“We’ve listened to what parents and schools have told us about what would be helpful during these uncertain times, and as a result we have established this school/parent helpline to provide expert practical support and guidance to parents and schools during the Covid-19 crisis.

“Please call us if you have any questions, regardless of how small the question might seem.”
