Police cadets help tackle jewellery theft

Police cadets in Bury have been out in the community raising awareness of Asian gold jewellery theft.

Cadets visited 600 homes last week in the Redvales and Radcliffe area of Bury giving out leaflets which provide advice on preventing jewellery theft and general advice on keeping your home safe and secure.

PCSO Wasim Tayyab said: “This has been a great initiative allowing the cadets to engage with the local community while providing useful advice to local residents on how to avoid becoming a target for burglars.“

The cadets alongside the police are giving homeowners practical advice on how to avoid being a target for burglars.

Always lock doors and windows when you are in the house and don’t leave open windows and doors unattended during the summer months.

When leaving the house for long periods of time or when out late at night, set a light timer to make your home look like it is occupied and set your alarm when leaving the house.

Make sure your valuables are out of sight from windows and photograph jewellery and other expensive items and register them on immobolise.com, a free database which allows property to be traced back to its original owner should it be stolen.

Homeowners should also consider investing in a safe which can be placed in a secure part of the home and bolted to the floor so it cannot be easily removed.

Never leave spare keys hidden outside as burglars often know all the usual hiding places, wheelie bins can also be used as a climbing aid for burglars so try to secure them away from windows when they’re not in use.

An effective way to reduce burglary is to work together with neighbours by setting up a Home Watch scheme. To find out more contact your local Neighbourhood Policing Team, details can be found at www.gmp.police.uk.

To report any suspicious behaviour in your area please dial 101, always call 999 in an emergency. You can also report crime anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
