Poppy Appeal launched today in Bury

The National Poppy Appeal has been launched in Bury today (Thursday 27 October) as we remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives and livelihoods during past and current conflicts.

Every year the British Royal Legion organises the poppy appeal which, as well as commemorating the fallen, raises funds to support men and women in the armed forces today.

Poppies will be available at locations across Bury, and can also be ordered from the British Royal Legion at https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/where you can also make a donation directly.

Councillor Shaheena Haroon, the Mayor of Bury, said: “Each year the Poppy Appeal helps to bring the community together in support of the great men and women who fought for our freedom and for those who are continuing to serve and protect our home. The British Royal Legion does wonderful work supporting veterans and their families, and getting a poppy is a great way to remember every brave soul and show your support.”

A Civic Service of Remembrance will be held on Sunday 13 November, 2022. Processions will depart from Bury Town Hall at 10.30am and will proceed along Knowsley Street, Haymarket Street and Market Street to the Cenotaph at Bury Parish Church.

A two-minute silence will be observed at 11am.

The Mayor of Bury and representatives of service, ex-service, pre-service and civilian organisations across Bury will lay wreaths at the Memorial. An Order of Proceedings sheet will be available and members of the public present are invited to join in the singing of hymns during the Wreath Laying Ceremony.

At the conclusion of the Wreath Laying Ceremony, a Service of Remembrance will be held in Bury Parish Church. Following this, a “March Past” of various detachments will take place at approximately 12.30pm, where the mayor will take the salute. The processions will dismiss, and light refreshments will be served in the Elizabethan Suite.

Manchester City’s Poppy Day is Saturday 5 November, followed by the Festival of Remembrance on Saturday 12 November and Remembrance Sunday on 13 November.
