Prestwich Library to relocate temporarily as next phase of major regeneration works begin

Bury Council has confirmed that Prestwich Library will temporarily relocate to the Phoenix Centre to enable the next phase of the Prestwich regeneration programme.

The Phoenix Centre is located within the accessible St Mary’s Park which is also close to other community facilities and has good transport links.

The upcoming regeneration works will focus on the redevelopment of the Longfield Shopping Centre, requiring the library to move out of its current home to allow demolition to proceed.

Bury Council and nationwide placemaker Muse are working together to regenerate Prestwich Village. In the future, a new larger library will be built, alongside community space.

The current library will temporarily close for a period while adaptation works are carried out at the Phoenix Centre and while library staff pack up the library at the Longfield Centre and then unpack and set it up within the Phoenix Centre.

Prestwich Library at the Longfield Centrewill temporarily close at 4.30pm on Friday 13 March 2026.

Prestwich Library at the Phoenix Centrewill reopen by the end of April 2026 (the exact reopening date will be confirmed nearer the time).

Jackie Veal, head of wellness and culture at Bury Council, said: “We are grateful for everyone’s patience while the interim library space is prepared. We look forward to welcoming all our members to the Phoenix Centre as soon as we reopen.”

A range of measures will be put in place to support customers during the closure period, including a date extension for the return of borrowed books and suspension of fines for a time limited period.
