Prestwich Travel Hub, another step forward

Prestwich Travel Hub takes another step towards opening this summer.

The new Travel Hub in Prestwich has moved closer to opening its doors this summer, following a decision that allows the Council to appoint an operator and complete the final stages of preparation.

Vital facilities and amenities will include more than 300 spaces, electric vehicle charging, cycle storage and direct access to the tram. It is designed to make everyday travel easier for residents, visitors and businesses, and will be an important gateway into the new village centre as the regeneration progresses.

The Travel Hub is a key part of the £100m regeneration of Prestwich, providing the connectivity needed for people to access the bigger and better village centre now being delivered.

Cllr Eamonn O’Brien, Leader of Bury Council, said: “This is Prestwich finally getting the sort of modern, joined-up transport hub that other places take for granted. People keep joking that it’s ‘just a car park’, but the plans show us that it’s so much more than that.

“This is all about choice. Having proper EV charging, secure cycle storage, space for carshare, and proper access to public transport in one place is exactly what a busy place like Prestwich needs in the 2020s and beyond.

“It sets us up for the future. We’ve all seen how the way people travel has changed.

“The hub makes it easier for residents, workers and visitors to leave the car behind when they want to, and gives people a safe, clean and reliable place to start and end their journeys when they do need to drive. That is what good, modern infrastructure should do.

“I’m looking forward to using it myself, but I’m also really proud that Prestwich is getting something that feels designed for the world we actually live in, not one we have left behind many years ago. This is a proper investment in our town and our future, and it’s great to finally see it taking shape.”

With around 250 new homes, more community facilities, a much larger library and improved public spaces on the way, the Travel Hub will become an essential gateway helping more people reach and enjoy the transformed town centre.

Allowing officers to complete the operator appointment now means the practical details of running the building can be shaped without delay.

This includes signage, accessibility, customer service arrangements and parking systems, all supporting a smooth opening.

The Council is aware of the ongoing disruption in the area and is grateful to residents and businesses for their patience as this vital infrastructure nears completion.

Construction is on track for completion in summer 2026, and once open, the Hub will become part of the daily rhythm of Prestwich, supporting local shops, easing congestion and creating a more reliable and modern transport experience for the community.
