Prize-winner Hana meets the Mayor
A primary school pupil who won a prize in a national anti-racism project has been congratulated by the Mayor of Bury.
Hana Arif (aged 8), who attends St Luke’s Primary, wrote a poem for the competition, which was organised by Show Racism the Red Card and Kick It Out.
She came third in the contest, which attracted more than 1,000 entries, and attended an awards ceremony at Chelsea FC’s ground Stamford Bridge to receive her prize.
Now she has visited Bury Town Hall to meet the mayor, Councillor Joan Grimshaw, accompanied by her friend Areeba Irfan, teachers Judith Bell and Gloria Devlin, andCllr Tamoor Tariq, who is a governor at St Luke’s.
They were given a tour of the mayor’s parlour and learned about the history of the mayors of Bury and when the town hall was built.
Both Hana and Areeba said they were excited to be meeting the mayor and enjoyed the tour.
Cllr Grimshaw said: “It was a pleasure to meet Hana and many congratulations to her for doing so well in the competition, which is an excellent way to tackle racism from a very young age.”
