Press release -
£30m makeover transforms 50+ miles of Bury roads
Bury Council’s £30m highway investment strategy is progressively making roads in the Bury borough better, smoother and safer.
Since the start of the extra investment in 2017, more than 50 miles (over 80 kilometres) of roads have been improved.
In the 12 months, April 2024 to March 2025, over six miles (10.2 km) of roads with an area of over 163,000 sq metres (equivalent to around 23 football pitches) benefitted from a resurfacing scheme, costing £2.9 million.
In addition, in summer 2024, over 8½ miles (14 km) of roads with an area of 85,000 sq metres (equivalent to around 20 tennis courts) benefitted from preventative maintenance, costing over £1 million.
Preventative maintenance is where the existing road surface is dressed/ overlaid rather than removed and then replaced. Surface dressing is less costly, quicker and less disruptive to road users, adding 10-15 years extra usage and preventing major deterioration and potholes in the future.
While resurfacing lasts longer, around 20 years, it is slower to carry out involving several processes. It also requires extensive road closures.
Cllr Alan Quinn, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Climate Change said: “Worth in the region of £1 billion, our highway network is one of our most valuable and vital assets.
“Thanks to our 9-year £30 million extra investment around 625 roads have already been improved, and many more roads are benefitting across this year too.
“We understand that road conditions are a key concern for residents. While it’s not practical or affordable to fix every road at once — with full resurfacing costing over £300 million — we’re working hard to improve the condition of roads across the Bury borough.
“Keeping local roads safe is a top priority and a key part of our LET’S Do It! Cleaner, Safer, Greener programme, to create better neighbourhoods and improved travel for everyone, whether you’re driving, cycling, wheeling or walking.”
