Press release -

Rapid community Covid testing to begin in Bury

Rapid turnaround testing for Covid symptoms is starting in Bury among those most likely to be affected in order to help drive down transmission rates.

The new Lateral Flow Device tests, which give results in 30 minutes, aim to identify people who do not have coronavirus symptoms but do have the infection and therefore could pass the virus on to others without knowing it.

If an individual receives a positive result having taken the test, even if they don't have symptoms - meaning they are asymptomatic -they must then self-isolate and reduce the risk of passing on the virus. They will also be recommended to take a second confirmatory test, either by attending one of the walk-through or drive-in centres in Bury, or requesting a kit to be delivered to their home - online at gov.uk or by calling 119.

Lesley Jones, Bury’s director of public health, said: “We are working as part of an overall Greater Manchester approach to implement rapid tests in the community.

“We have begun piloting the programme in a small number of schools and health and care settings and detailed planning is under way for a wider roll out in January to schools and colleges, certain workplaces and occupations and those health and care settings not already part of the DHSC testing programme.”

She added: “These tests will not eradicate the disease, but they will help to identify positive cases more quickly, and are an extra tool in reducing transmission in Bury. Together with the Covid vaccination centres that will shortly open in Bury, there is reason for optimism.

“However, the infection rate in Bury is still above 200 per 100,000 residents. That’s why it is it vital that we all continue to follow the rules – make space, cover your face and wash your hands – to stop coronavirus spreading throughout our borough.”

* Anyone with one or more of these symptoms – a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or a loss or change to sense of smell or taste – should book a test.

* There are a number of testing centres in Bury – including drive-through, walk-up and appointment only. For details, and to book a test, go to https://www.bury.gov.uk/coronavirus-testing or call 0161 253 5515.
