Recycle for Bury Easter egg winner

An extraordinary Easter egg was won in a free prize draw at Ramsbottom Chocolate Festival by Rachel Kay of Bury.

The individually designed egg, donated by Bury Council’s recycling awareness team, was branded ‘Recycle for Bury’ and lovingly created by Slattery’s of Whitefield.

Along with 79 other residents at the festival, Rachel entered the free prize draw by taking the ‘Recycle more for Bury’ pledge and committing to recycle as much as she can. People who pledge also agree to a range of other ‘green’ actions, including: only using their grey rubbish bin for waste they can’t recycle; recycling all the right items in the right bin; and not using plastic bags in any of their recycling bins.

Bury’s recycling awareness team attendedthe festival specifically to promote food waste recycling, offering residents help, advice and practical tips on how to make it part of their daily life. Free kitchen caddies and compostable liners were available for residents to take away and, for those residents who have only a small brown bin, there was the option to upsize it to a slimline wheeled bin free of charge.

Glenn Stuart, the council’s head of waste management, said: “The annual Ramsbottom Chocolate Festival with its many visitors provides a great platform for us to showcase recycling and answer residents’ questions.

“We’re currently trying to boost the number of homes that recycle food waste by highlighting just how easy it is to make it part of daily life.

“There really is no excuse for not recycling food waste because it’s free, it’s easy and we give residents everything they need. It also helps save money for other public services.”

During the festival 60 residents took away free caddies and compostable liners to use at home in their kitchens, and 25 residents requested a brown bin.

All residents who take the ‘Recycle more for Bury’ pledge are given the chance to win one of two £50 shopping vouchers. To take the pledge, go to www.bury.gov.uk/recycling-pledge.

Residents who want a brown bin or want to change from a small brown bin to a slimline wheeled bin can do so free of charge at www.bury.gov.uk/requestabin or by phoning 0161 253 5353. A free kitchen caddy with liners can also be requested or collected from libraries across the borough.
