Recycled designs go on show in Bury

Young people from across Bury have been putting their fashion design talents to the test by creating outfits made from rubbish ready for a ‘Trashion Show’ this Sunday.

The outfits will be exhibited in public at the Mill Gate Shopping Centre in Bury from 1pm on Sunday 26 January. The Trashion Show event is being organised by the Big Lottery funded Streets of Community Spirit (SOCS) project run by Groundwork.

Schools, colleges and youth groups are getting ready to exhibit their finished outfits - runway style. The outfits will be made out of recyclable or upcycled materials and modelled by one of the groups own participants in front of a panel of judges including the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Sharon Briggs.

The Trashion Show aims to bring together different groups of young people from across Bury, involving them in a community project and raising the awareness of recycling and waste.

Sarah Hill, Technology Tutor at Prestwich Arts College, said: "Trashion Fashion has enabled our pupils to gain confidence in their practical abilities by using their creative skills in adapting the recycled materials to design and create inspirational outfits. The pupils involved are looking forward to exhibiting their outfits and accessories on Sunday."

The event will be supported by Tower FM, which includes a guest appearance from one of the shows presenters and the Tower FM street team.

Rachael Bamber, SOCS Project Officer AT Groundwork, said: “There has been great excitement in the run up to the show. The young people involved are very dedicated and the SOCS team are looking forward to seeing the finished outfits.”

The Trashion Show will take place at Schorndorf Square in Mill Gate Shopping Centre and spectators are invited to join the fun between 1-3pm. Seating will be allocated on a first come basis. For more information call Rachael Bamber at Groundwork on 0161 724 3770.
