Press release —
Residents invited to view updated Streets for All proposals for Ramsbottom town centre
Residents are being invited to attend public presentation events to view revised proposals for the Streets for All scheme in Ramsbottom town centre, following significant updates made in response to community feedback.
The updated plans come after a public consultation held in November 2024, which received 1,504 responses. Feedback from this engagement has played a central role in reshaping the scheme.
The most notable change is the decision not to proceed with the previously proposed one-way system. Concerns raised by respondents included the potential impact on traffic congestion, emergency service access, and the suitability of routes such as Kay Brow for heavy goods vehicles.
While the one-way system has been removed, there was strong support for a number of other measures aimed at improving safety and accessibility in the town centre. These include enhanced and additional pedestrian crossings, improved footways, and the introduction of a 20mph zone.
Plans to improve walking routes through and to Nuttall Park have also been retained, where these do not depend on the one-way system.
As part of the revised proposals, a new pedestrian crossing on Bridge Street will require the removal of 10 on-street parking spaces. However, this will be offset by a new 47-space car park at the nearby Mondi Mill housing development, within walking distance of the town centre.
Peter Stokes, Head of Engineering and Streetscene at Bury Council, said: ”We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to share their views during the consultation. It was important to us that we listened carefully, and the updated proposals reflect the feedback we received – particularly the decision not to proceed with the one-way system. We believe the revised plans strike a better balance between improving safety, accessibility and maintaining how the town centre functions, and we encourage residents to come along to the events to find out more.”
