Road improvement works start in Ramsbottom

Press release -

Road improvement works start in Ramsbottom

A scheme to upgrade a main road through Ramsbottom starts on Monday (12 March) as part of a £10 million plan of major road improvements in the borough.

Work on Peel Brow/Bury New Road/Bridge Street will resurface the carriageway and carry out footway and drainage repairs between the level crossing at Bridge Street and the M66 bridge. A 50m stretch will also be resurfaced at the junction of Bury New Road and Manchester Road to improve skid resistance on the approach to the signals.

Preliminary drainage and footway works will be carried out Monday to Friday using temporary traffic signals outside peak periods (9.30am to 3pm). However, it will be necessary when undertaking the carriageway surfacing to extend the working period, from 7am to 8pm. Outside normal working hours we will attempt to carry out ‘low noise’ activities.

The works are scheduled to last eight weeks, during which some disruption will be inevitable; however, the council will try to keep this to a minimum.

Some sections of the road will need to be closed to traffic during the resurfacing works, and local residents are advised to make alternative parking arrangements during the day. The council will try to maintain limited access to all residential and business properties, and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

The Ramsbottom scheme is one of five major road improvements scheduled for the coming months.

The other four are:

  • Longsight Road (19 March to 14 April)
  • Tottington Road, Bury (19 to 26 April)
  • Parkhills Road, Bury (16 April to 20 May)
  • Manchester Road (8 to 26 May)

Councillor Rishi Shori, leader of the council, said: “The condition of our roads is something that concerns everyone in Bury, and towns and cities across the country are likewise struggling to repair streets which have been further damaged by the prolonged winter.

“This is why, despite suffering from years of ‘austerity’ and underfunding, we decided to find an extra £10 million to invest in our road network. While the work will cause some disruption, I’m sure that residents across the borough will welcome these improvements.”
