Runners get set for the Bury Running Festival

Runners of all ages and abilities are getting ready to pull on their trainers for the Bury Running festival, taking place on Sunday 20 November.

The day will play host to the much-loved Bury 10K, the popular Arena Group Bury Fun Run and this year’s brand-new event, the Bury 10 Mile.

Delivered as a partnership between Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All and Bury Council, the bigger and better Bury Running Festival builds on the success of the Bury 10K which first came to town in 2016.

The action-packed day of running will start and finish at The Rock shopping centre:

  • The Bury 10 mile will kick-off at 9am.
  • The Bury 10k will follow shortly after at 9.30am.
  • The Fun Run will start at 11.45am, after the 10k and 10m have ended.

The 10-mile route will see runners make their way out of the town centre, along Tottington Road, Bury Road, Scobell Street, Church Street, Bradshaw Road, Harwood Road, Holcombe Road, Brandlesholme Road, before heading into Kirklees Valley Local Nature Reserve and along Kirklees Trail. Runners will then make their way back to the town centre, and via the British Transport Museum for the big finish.

The 10K route follows a similar path as the 10-mile but takes a less expansive route of the town centre, while still allowing participants to take in the scenic views of Kirklees Valley.

Spectators planning to support participants along the route will be able to take advantage of various spectator points. These include; the Kirklees Trail path, the start and finish pedestrian areas by The Rock, the turning point for the 10k on Holcombe Road and the turning point for the 10 Mile on Brandlesholme Road.

The Arena Group Bury Fun will cover a much shorter distance of 1.2km and will keep within Bury town centre. The Fun Run is open to runners aged 3+ and Run For All are encouraging children of all backgrounds and abilities to take part; those with mobility issues or any other special considerations are advised to get in touch.

As part of the event, runners are encouraged to fundraise for their own charity of choice or one of the event’s partner charities. This year’s partner charities include; Bury Hospice, Womens Housing Action Group (WHAG) and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

Councillor Tamoor Tariq, cabinet member for adult care, health and wellbeing at Bry Council, said: “After a two-year hiatus, it’s great to see the return of a community event for all ages and abilities to get involved in and which will benefit so many local and national charities.

“The event is a much-loved part of the town’s sporting calendar, so we have no doubt it will be a fantastic day of running, fundraising and joy in the town of Bury. “

Tristan Batley-Kyle, operations director at Run For All, said: “We are really looking forward to the Bury Running Festival. All three events are set to deliver a carnival celebration of running, fundraising and Northern pride in the town of Bury.

“We invite runners of all abilities to take part, and whether they are aiming for a PB or fundraising for a charity of choice, we hope everyone taking part in this year’s Bury Running Festival has a fantastic race day experience.”

BBC Manchester is the official radio partner for the Bury Running Festival and will be broadcasting live from the start and finish line.

Organised by Run For All, the Bury Running Festival forms part of the hugely successful Run For All series, which includes events in Leeds, Sheffield, Derby, Hull, Middlesbrough, King’s Lynn, Bury, Lincoln, Ipswich and the Yorkshire Dales.

This year’s Bury Running Festival is supported by The Rock Bury, High 5, Coopah, BBC Radio Manchester, Water In A Box, Shokz, Up and Running, Go Puff, Arla Protein and Marathon Photos.

About Run for All

Run For All is part of Jane Tomlinson CBE’s lasting legacy. Jane raised £1.85m for children’s and cancer charities before her untimely death from cancer aged just 43 in 2007.

She made headlines across the world by competing in a series of epic endurance challenges from the London Marathon, Ironman and triathlon competitions, to a 4,200 mile cycle ride across the width of the USA – despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Her family continue to raise funds in her name, and through the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and Run For All, more than £10m has now been raised for charities
