Say ‘cheers’ to recycling at the World Cup finals

Football fans are being urged to give recycling a boost during the upcoming World Cup finals.

Thousands of drinks cans and bottles are expected to be raised in Bury throughout June and July while the tournament takes place in Russia.

Waste bosses at Bury Council are reminding supporters that every one of these steel and aluminium cans and glass bottles can be recycled in your blue bin.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Before we probably crash out yet again on penalties, let’s at least win the recycling challenge by putting all our empty cans and bottles in the blue bin.

“Remember, you can crush your drinks cans to make more space in the blue bin.

“And don’t forget food – any leftover pizza or takeaway grub can go in the brown bin (in compostable bags), while the (clean) pizza box can go in the green bin and clean foil trays in the blue bin.”

Did you know?

  • Every steel can is 100% recyclable. They can be turned into more steel cans, bicycles, parts for cars and many other everyday products each and every time.
  • 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours.
  • Manufacturing one aluminium drinks can from raw materials uses the same amount of energy as it would take to recycle 20 drinks cans.
  • Glass is 100% recyclable and can be reused over and over again.
  • 1 recycled glass bottle will save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes.
  • Some 8,975 tonnes of blue bin waste was recycled in Bury last year.
  • Recycling saves Bury Council money that can be invested in frontline services.

To check what can be recycled, request a recycling bin, check your bin collection dates or sign-up for e-mail reminders, visit www.bury.gov.uk/recycling
