Short-stay service re-opens for business following major refurbishment

Bury Council’s Short Stay Provision is re-opening for business following major refurbishment at a cost of £1.6m.

Members of the public and social care providers are invited to a grand opening event to look around the improved facilities at Whalley Road, Whitefield on Wednesday 17 December 2014 from 1pm to 2pm.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to see the new Woodbury which, like Elmhurst, offers short-term care and/or respite for adults with a learning disability.

Pat Jones-Greenhalgh, Bury Council’s executive director of communities and wellbeing, will formally re-open the site and visitors can take a guided tour of the facilities. Light refreshments will be served.

Councillor Rishi Shori, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “We wanted to invest in high quality fixtures and fittings and provide discreet, comfortable and well-equipped facilities for our customers.

“The aim was to move away from the traditional ‘institution’ to a hotel model, fully equipped en-suite bedrooms which are dementia friendly and the majority of which conform to disability access regulations. The facility boasts energy efficient features such as sun tunnels, state of the art heating and solar panels.

“The event is also a ‘thank you’ to staff at Elmhurst and Spurr House and Woodbury who worked tirelessly throughout the three phases of the refurbishment to continue to deliver quality services to its customers during the development.”

Local community and disability groups, social care and health providers, and those who designed and refurbished the facility have also been invited.
