Sporting heroes do Bury proud at regional awards night

Winners of the annual Bury Sports Awards bathed in Olympic glory when they represented the borough at the annual Greater Manchester awards.

The “magnificent seven” attended the glittering annual ceremony with staff from the council’s sports development team, and got to rub shoulders with Britain’s medal-winning swimmer Rebecca Adlington.

Councillor Jane Lewis, cabinet member for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “It was great that locals from Bury could be there to represent the borough at this significant event in the North West’s sporting calendar.

“The purpose of this event is to recognise the modest and hard-working sports men and women people who have achieved amazing goals and inspired others in sport, coaching and volunteering.”

The awards were held at The Point, Emirates Old Trafford.

The seven Bury nominees were:

·  Changing lifestyle recognition award - Christopher Beck

·  Unsung hero - Antony Lawson

·  Volunteer of the year - Darren Lindsay

·  Coach of the year - Rick Lee

·  Club of the year - Bury Cricket Club

·  Sports achiever of the year - Sam Ernst

·  Disabled sports achiever of the year - Matthew Topping
