Stand together in the fight against domestic violence and abuse

Council leaders are urging everyone in Bury to show their support for the White Ribbon Campaign against domestic violence and abuse.

The campaign aims to recruit men from all walks of life; young and old, from different communities, backgrounds and professions. These ‘ambassadors’ pledge to never engage in, excuse or refrain from speaking out against abuse.

Services in Bury are helping to spread the word of this campaign during a worldwide official 16 days of action which will end on 10 December (Human Rights Day). They are doing this through fundraising, donating to the White Ribbon Campaign, cake-selling, making presentations about domestic violence and abuse, wearing white ribbons, signing pledges, hosting coffee mornings, distributing leaflets and most importantly talking about domestic violence and abuse.

Councillor Tamoor Tariq, Bury Council’s cabinet member for communities and safer neighbourhoods, has signed up to be Bury's new White Ribbon ambassador and will be the campaign’s link in taking the message out to communities.

He said: "Domestic violence and abuse has a devastating impact on the lives of victims and their families. We need a culture change to end this abuse, and we need people to speak out about it and condemn it.

“The White Ribbon campaign will hopefully encourage and empower other men to stand up against domestic violence and abuse, and become role models for other men and boys.”

The campaign recruits all year round. For more details on how to become an ambassador, go to www.whiteribboncampaign.co.uk
