Supporting Fairtrade in Bury

A range of events is taking place in Bury to mark national Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 23 February to 8 March.

These include free chocolate tasting at the Mill Gate centre in Bury on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 February.

Faith groups throughout Bury will be holding coffee mornings and sales of Fairtrade goods: details http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/en/get-involved/in-your-community/faith-groups

Schools and colleges will be focusing on Fairtrade at assemblies and in lessons, some using new materials being produced by the Fairtrade Foundation: http://schools.fairtrade.org.uk/fairtrade-schools

Fairfield Hospital staff will be treated to free Fairtrade tea and coffee, while patients and staff will be able to view a special exhibition in the cafeteria.

Meanwhile, council display screens will be publicising the council’s support for Bury as one of the UK’s Fairtrade towns. There will be displays at several locations including Bury Town Hall, Oxfam, Tourist Information Centre and the Mosses Centre.

Bernard Emblem, chair of Bury Fairtrade, said: “We’ve come so far since the first Fairtrade Fortnight in 1995, encouraging the public to choose Fairtrade and increasing sales on Fairtrade terms for marginalised producers. Over the past 20 years, together we’ve made the Fairtrade mark the biggest and best known ethical label in the UK. It looks like it’s going to be even better than last year: hope you can join us! We have lots of resources - let us know if you’d like some support with an event.”
