Supporting International Women’s Day

Bury Council is supporting International Women’s Day, which is celebrated across the world on Saturday 8 March.

Thousands of events are taking place across the globe to celebrate the social, economic, and political achievements of women.

A number of Bury groups have organised events to mark the occasion; at local children’s centres where mums have gained qualifications, at the Mosses Centre where women have been talking about their experiences of living in war zones, and at Bury College where students have been learning about domestic abuse issues.

This year’s theme is Inspiring Change, recognising women’s achievements but looking forward to the future, and inspiring women themselves to make positive changes.

Councillor Sandra Walmsley, cabinet member for communities and community safety, said: “There have been many positive gains in relation to women’s equality over the years. However, we cannot afford to be complacent and need to recognise that there are still major inequalities that need to be addressed.

“We continue to support voluntary and community sector groups across our borough to help achieve positive changes for women through a range of our funding schemes. This includes work through the Bury Asian Women’s Centre and Prestwich and Whitefield Townswomen’s Guild.

“Also, under the Local Government Association’s ‘Be a Councillor’

campaign, we are encouraging more women to become involved in local government decision-making and the electoral process.

“Right here in Bury, through the Sport England Lottery-funded I Will if You Will movement, our women and girls aged 14+ are being offered a fantastic opportunity to get moving, be a bit more active and try something new. So don’t miss out ladies, if you fancy a change of scene and a bit of ‘me time’, join in now at http://www.iwillifyouwill.co.uk/ and download your ‘bring a friend for free’ voucher.”

One of Bury Council’s most senior officers is Pat Jones-Greenhalgh, executive director of adult care services. Her advice is: “Try not to be a woman of success, but rather try to be a woman of value, motivation and inspiration, and with it will come success.”
