Press release -
‘Tis the season to recycle real Christmas trees
As the festive period comes to an end, Bury Council is reminding everyone of the options for recycling real Christmas trees.
Trees can be recycled in the brown recycling bin, if all lights, decorations and the wooden base are removed and the trees are chopped up so that they fit inside the brown bin with the lid fully closed.
Trees can also be taken to any of the household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) across Greater Manchester. The centres in Bury and Radcliffe are open 7 days a week from 8am to 6pm, as is Lumns Lane in Salford. Unwanted artificial Christmas trees can also be taken to any HWRC.
Alternatively, Bury Hospice offers a real Christmas tree collection service. All trees are chipped and either used on a golf course or as green fuel as biomass. Trees will be collected from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 January. To take advantage of this service, register at Bury Hospice website by midnight on 5 January 2026. The suggested donation is £20 but anyone in a position to give more may do so.
