To our volunteer heroes – we thank you

The hundreds of volunteers who are looking after our most vulnerable have been thanked by council leader David Jones and chief executive Geoff Little.

They have issued a public letter to the 670 volunteers linked to the Community Hubs, the many grassroots groups and collectives, and the countless individuals who are supporting their neighbours and friends through the Covid-19 crisis.

Their letter in full:

“Dear colleague,

“I am writing to you as one of Bury’s volunteers to thank you for stepping up to support your community during the current emergency.

“Since the start of Covid-19 there have been significant numbers of people in the community requiring help and support to get through these difficult times. I have been amazed and delighted how our communities have organised themselves to step up to support fellow neighbours and residents. This support has been invaluable to both the individuals and the wider community and has confirmed to me the strength of the Bury people community spirit.

“Each and every one of your contributions is appreciated - from those individuals looking after your family, neighbours and streets, to groups and organisation who have come together to organise efforts to support your communities. Without you, these people who are the most clinically vulnerable to Covid-19 may not be able to self-isolate and would be at significant risk.

“In the meantime, however, this email is just a message of thanks. I absolutely realise how much of your own time and energy you are giving up. Many of you have jobs, families and other commitments that you are balancing in order to help your neighbours. Your hard work is truly appreciated and you are doing a simply brilliant job.

“With many thanks.”
