Transforming travel in Fishpool and Pimhole: Phase 2 of a £5.7m scheme starting soon

The second phase of the Bee Active Travel Scheme in Fishpool and Pimhole is set to begin on 3 November 2025, marking another milestone in the borough’s commitment to safer, greener, and more accessible travel.

Funded by the UK Government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement and the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Challenge Fund, this £5.7 million investment is part of the wider Bee Network – Greater Manchester’s vision for an integrated transport system that makes walking, wheeling, and cycling easier and safer for everyone.

Phase 2 improvement works will run for approximately 12 months, with completion expected by winter 2026. The scheme has been developed in close collaboration with the local community to ensure it meets the needs of residents and enhances everyday journeys.

Key improvements include:

  • Upgraded traffic junctions
  • New and improved pedestrian crossing points
  • Continuous footways
  • Traffic calming measures
  • Low-traffic zones on selected streets

These enhancements will enhance connectivity to Bury town centre and other local facilities, encouraging more people to choose active travel for short journeys and helping to create a healthier, more sustainable environment.

What residents can expect during the works:

  • Temporary traffic lights and lane closures
  • Diversion routes due to essential road closures
  • Alternative pedestrian routes and crossings

Advance warning signs will be placed out at each site before work begins, and all diversion routes will be clearly marked to minimise disruption.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “We’re excited to begin the next phase of the Bee Active Travel Scheme in Fishpool and Pimhole, which will bring lasting improvements to how people move around their neighbourhood. While there will be some temporary disruption during the works, including road closures and diversions, every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience for residents.

“Once complete, the scheme will make it safer and easier to walk, wheel or cycle locally, helping people choose healthier and more sustainable ways to travel. The long-term benefits will far outweigh the disruption caused during the works.”

The Phase 2 programme includes 12 individual projects, each focused on specific roads and streets within Fishpool and Pimhole. For more detailed information, visit:
