Tree works at Island Lodge, Bury

Bury Council are working with Proffitts Investing in Communities on a project to protect Island Lodge along the Kirklees Valley nature reserve, a popular destination for walkers, anglers, bird watchers and families.

Vegetation clearance is proposed including removal of trees, shrubs and brambles from the southern embankment of the lodge, as well as removing small trees on the eastern embankment. The larger trees at the lodge will remain and have their tops and branches cut off to encourage new growth at the top.

The tree work at the lodge is expected to begin during January or February 2026 with contractors on site for up to four weeks. Works will be completed before the bird nesting season begins.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “The works taking place as part of this project are required by the Environment Agency to meet legal safety requirements of the Reservoirs Act 1975, and to make sure that the lodge doesn't breach and flood the land and homes nearby.

“There have been several issues at the lodge in recent years including leaks in the walls around the lodge, as well as serious problems with weeds, brambles and fallen trees. This causes issues for visitors, wildlife and the wider environment and we’re happy to be moving ahead with these much-needed improvements.

“Unfortunately, some trees will have to be removed to protect the integrity of the reservoir, and we will look to plant replacement trees in the future. Overall, this project is an opportunity to address all those issues comprehensively and enhance the lodge for everyone who uses and enjoys the area.

“I’d also like to thank the local volunteers who work very hard all year round to look after this valuable community asset.”
